Have you ever “lost” your glasses? This classic scenario has happened to us all at one time or another. You searched high and low, in the car, and in the house. Exhasperated, perhaps you reached up and scratched your head… only to find that your glasses were there the whole time. How sheepish we’ve all felt when this has happened!
It wasn’t the absence of the glasses that troubled you. It was the perception that the glasses weren’t there. The reality was that they were there the entire time.
The presence of God is one of the core attributes of our Saviour, but it is perhaps the attribute we question the most. David said in Psalm 139:6-10, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.”
I’m with David on this one. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me! I know He is there, but I don’t understand how He could be! In faith, we can rest on the fact that God is ALWAYS there.
1. He’s There in our Storms
Isa. 43:2 “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
2. He’s There in our Sorrows
Psa. 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
3. He’s There in our Stress
2 Tim. 4:16-17 “At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.”
4. He’s There in our Service
Matt. 28:19-20 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Though I may not understand God’s presence, I can rest assured that it is real. Let us, as Christians, work to accept the reality of one of God’s greatest attributes. Let us go forward knowing He is there.
